During the trials, several participants with eye damage appeared to show improvement by nearly 54 percent when intense supervision of this disease was applied. It is important to closely monitor diabetes symptoms in order to prevent such extensive damage like this to occur.
* The DCCT was the leading, most extensive study ever conducted on diabetes. The study involved 1,441 participants with type 1 diabetes and included 29 various medical centers in Canada and the United States. All volunteers had diabetes for a minimum of one year, but less than 15 years, and were also required to have no early signs of diabetes induced eye disease. Two treatment procedures were compared in the study on the complications of diabetes: standard therapy and intensive control. Participants were assigned randomly to each of the treatment groups.
There are 18.2 million people in the United States, or 6.3% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 13 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 5.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease. Approximately 10 percent of people with diabetes have Type 1 diabetes. The remainder have Type 2. It is important to remember that a diabetes diet will clearly improve diabetes or symptoms of diabetes.

- When you do snack, try low fat yogurts and cheese, unsalted and unbuttered popcorn, fruit slices, raw vegetables with low-calorie dips.
- For a treat or dessert, select fruit, sherbet, frozen yogurt or ice milk. Try to avoid pastries such as cookies, cakes and pies.
- Increase your consumption of omega 3 fatty acids, which can be found in salmon and flax or in other healthy sources.
- Only use natural sweeteners such as Stevia.
- Exercise regularly. The following medications are commonly used to help manage Type 2 diabetes:
Acarbose (Prandase®) - delays the absorption and digestion of sugar within the stomach. Two hours after you eat, you should check your blood sugar. If you are taking other medications, and low blood sugar takes place, use only milk or glucose tablets.
Metformin (Glucophage®) - reduces production and output of sugar in the liver. Should not be taken if you have decreased liver or kidney function, or heart failure. Do not use if you have a previous history or consume large quantities of alcohol.

Gliclazide (Diamicron), Glyburide (Diabeta) - it is not advisable to skip meals while taking gliclazide or glyburide. While taking these medications, your sugar reading will be lower, and you can expect to gain weight. Use with caution if you have had a previous reaction to sulfa pills. Gliclazide and glyburide may cause an increased sensitivity to the sun.
Glimepiride (Amaryl®) – Avoid these medications if you have liver, kidney, or heart disease. Use with caution if you have had a previous reaction to sulfa pills. This drug may cause an increased sensitivity to the sun.
Repaglinide (Gluconorm®) – in order maintain blood sugar levels, you should include carbohydrates in each meal. And remember not to miss any meals. Use caution when using this drug if you have impaired liver function.
